Newfoundland to Become Have Province!

Remember that headline?

Before Danny Williams was elected, Newfoundland (as it was then known) was on the brink of becoming a have province. The news was everywhere! I remember reading it with both surprise and delight. It’s tough to build an economy on a rock: and finally they’ve done it. Way to go! It was good for them and good for Canada.

Then some bully gets elected and starts chasing out the industry that was turning around the province: namely mining, and of course, offshore oil. In the process, he also chased out the next generation (ironically, in large part, to oil services jobs in Alberta).

Now the guy who almost singlehandedly sunk the province is at 70-something in the polls because he is making some loudmouth threats while chasing some elusive federal “equalization” money. The amount he’s chasing, of course, is far less than the lost revenue from resource royalties and industrious young people that he just finished chasing away — but that’s not the point!

Wake up Newfoundland and Labrador: there is an evil force lurking amongst you. It’s not the evil corporations, the evil federal government, the evil Stephen Harper or the evil mainlanders: it’s Danny Williams.
