Respect for Other Faiths

Many Conservative bloggers have responded to the London bombings as one might expect — with an equal part sadness and an equal part determination of purpose to bring these terrorists to justice. I feel both ways, too.

(The only problem is that Canada often lacks the will to stand up for the cause, and even if we are on side, it is doubtful whether our underfunded military has the capability to lend much assistance anyway — but that’s an issue for another day.)

So, let’s be clear about one thing before I continue: these terrorists should be hunted down and brought to justice! Whatever their rationale, however unfortunate their personal circumstances, however unjust they feel the world has been to them, et cetera, the line has been crossed, and THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO JUSTIFICATION FOR THIS ACTION, AND I HAVE ZERO SYMPATHY FOR THE PERPETRATORS!

Now, here’s the thing: some of the nicest people I know are muslims. They demonstrate the wisdom of their faith in their actions: generosity, close families, and respect for others in the greater community.

Every religion turns out their ferocious zealots. Christianity has its fair share; let’s not forget about abortion clinic bombings and paramilitary cults.

Our response must remain a war against terror, and we must never allow it to become a war against a religion. Frankly, the religion is the victim, not the perpetrator.

If I could get one message to somebody thinking about committing an act of terror, it would be this: “Ending the lives of innocent people is no way to prove a point about the superiority of your faith. It only fans the flames of hatred and bigotry against your faith, and bigotry is something the world does not need more of!”
